Iraqi Death Toll on the Rise Again
The New York Times reported today that the U.S. Death Toll Rises in Iraq After Drop in March. I’ve been wondering about this for awhile, but finally took the time today to figure it out. What is going to happen when the death toll in Iraq equals the death toll from the World Trade Center bombing?
According to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count the total number of U.S. Deaths in Iraq is 2361, which comes out to an average of 2.3 deaths per day. The total number of deaths from the World Trade Center attacks is 2986. This means that if things continue as they are right now, in about 5 months we will have lost another 625 soldiers, equaling the WTC death toll.
If the situation resembles at all what is today, will there be anyone who will still claim that invading Iraq was worth it? Fortunately for the Republicans sweating a tough midterm election, this day, if it comes will be in January 2007, not October 2006.
Still, I hope this gives people pause.
